When a dog, or even a rat, is new to shaping, it can be helpful to use a novel prop because its presence tends to get the animals attention. You can then hone that focus into a specific behavior. In this video, Virginia begins by getting the dog to mark a target with his front paw. As you begin with your own dog, you can decide how you would like this behavior to look.
